Ready for School: New Building and New Classrooms - Burnaby Schools

Students and staff at three elementary schools are returning this fall with the added excitement of beginning the 2026-27 school year with their new building or completed expansion.

Stride Avenue Community School’s state-of-the-art building, as well as Brentwood Park and Nelson Elementary schools’ expansions are all ready to welcome their school communities. These and other capital projects in the District and beyond were celebrated at an event with Premier David Eby at Stride on September 1.

The seismic replacement of Stride’s new building includes space for an Indigenous Hub, child care with before and after school care, and the StrongStart BC program. The project, with 415 seats, was designed with environmental efficiency to reduce emissions.

At Nelson Elementary, the newly constructed prefabricated four-classroom addition provides space for 100 new students.

Phase one of construction at Brentwood Park Elementary is anticipated to be ready early this fall and will include seven more classrooms and a new gym. The expansion will provide 165 new seats. The next phase of the project includes a seismic upgrade of the entire school and an addition for more child care.

Other Capital Projects Underway

An expansion at Kitchener Elementary is also anticipated to be ready this fall and will create space for 500 new seats.

Construction started in July at Cameron Elementary for a three-story replacement school and is anticipated to be completed in September of 2028. This project will add 425 seats, increasing the school to accommodate 770 students. It will feature a neighbourhood learning centre, include before and after school care spaces, and a community hub for Indigenous learning.

At Alpha Secondary, a new two-story 12-classroom addition will add space for 300 more students. Completion is anticipated in the summer of 2027.
